How to access the COVID-19 vaccine

We are working to provide more capacity in addition to booked appointments safely as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, more information on how to access the vaccine in Hampshire and Isle of Wight is available below.

  • Via a local GP service: GP practices are working together across the county to vaccinate as many people as possible. Residents may be contacted by a different surgery to the one they usually go to. These sites are delivering booster doses and third doses for people who are immunosuppressed.

  • At a vaccination centre: In our area we have centres at St James's Hospital in Portsmouth, Riverside on the Isle of Wight and Oakley Road in Southampton, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. Eligible people should receive a letter advising them of this route to book an appointment.  These sites are offering appointments for booster doses and first doses for children aged 12 – 17. These sites are also offering walk-in options for first and second doses. More appointments Hampshire and Isle of Wight are being added to the National Booking Service (NBS) daily. We know that additional appointment slots are booked up very quickly, therefore we would advise people to check regularly for any updates here. Alternatively call the National Booking Service on 119 (open between 7am and 11pm daily. We will provide further updates as soon as possible.

  • Some local pharmacies: NHS England and Improvement has arranged for some pharmacies in Hampshire and Isle of Wight to provide the booster vaccination on an appointment basis. People can book an appointment at a pharmacy via the National Booking System online or by calling 119.

Vaccination types

The coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines are safe and effective. They give you the best protection against COVID-19.

Who can get a COVID-19 vaccine

  • Everyone aged 5 and over can get a 1st and 2nd dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
  • People aged 16 and over, and some children aged 12 to 15, can also get a booster dose.
  • People aged 12 and over who had a severely weakened immune system when they had their first 2 doses, will be offered a 3rd dose and a booster (4th dose).
  • People aged 75 and over, people who live in care homes for older people, and people aged 12 and over who have a weakened immune system, will be offered a spring booster.

What types of COVID-19 vaccine are there and what will I get?

There are a number of  COVID-19 vaccines currently approved for use in the UK. However, the most common are:

  • Moderna vaccine
  • Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine
  • Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine

You cannot usually choose which vaccine you have. All the vaccines are safe and approved for use in the UK. When you book your appointment at a vaccination site, at your GP or local pharmacy, or attend a walk-in site, you'll only be offered appointments for vaccines that are suitable for you. A lot of sites list what they are giving on the day.

Most people can have any of the COVID-19 vaccines, but some people are only offered certain vaccines. You can find out more here: Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine - NHS (www.nhs.uk)

Most of the time both your 1st and 2nd doses (known as your primary course) will be with the same vaccine, unless you had serious side effects (such as a serious allergic reaction) after your 1st dose.

Most people will be offered a booster dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine or Moderna vaccine. This means your booster dose may be different from the vaccine you had for your first 2 doses. Not only is this safe but current studies suggest a mix of vaccines might actually provide better protection.
